Recently, I had the enjoyment of attending The Future of Web Apps in London. This was my second FOWA in London since 2008 and I was really pleased to learn that we would not need to make a long trek out into the Docklands this year.
This is also my Fifth ‘Future of’ event having actually gone to Future of Website design in New York City, The now defunct Future of Mobile and lastly The Future of Web Apps in Edinburgh which are all part of the very same Carsonified occasions umbrella hosted by among the most cordial hosts in the tech scene– Ryan Carson.
One word describes a Carsonified event to me: ‘Funky’ which is no wonder they were the event organizers behind this years Twitter Conference appropriately called ‘Chirp’. This could be huge for the health and wellness industry. Carsonified makes the technology company feel cool– which is motivating to all included and promotes an environment for individuals to share their concepts whilst having a good time.
This year’s FOWA had a very various theme to the previous occasions I have actually participated in. That being, vendors of some pretty cool online Applications encouraging Business owners and Designers alike to charge for their services. This theme was additional stressed by a session called: The best ways to Get People to Pay For Exactly what’s Already Free, Delivered by White Bear Lawn’s Eileen Burbridge & Linus Olsson of Flattr (Which is a system for paying individuals who’s website material you like).
In addition to the inspired story behind one of FOWA’s Sponsors Squarespace– a site building tool to help designers accelerate the Web Design and Advancement process. Their story was quite easy. They charged people for their services, no Freemium Design. They just kept their payment plan easy by charging on a Regular monthly or Annual basis and continued to do so for 7 years, growing their company organically. Up until recently, when they decided to take Equity capital investment from Index Ventures and Accel Partners.
Free services online are not sustainable. Servers are pricey, Designers are expensive and Designers are ending up being more needed as the general public’s expectations rise to expect well formatted material. This pattern makes sure to take shape in our ever growing online market.
Thank you FOWA for having us along! This was definitely an event I quickly will not forget.
