‘The seed is planted… Terror Grows’

It was announced on Wednesday the 20th of October 2010 the Macbook Air will not ship with Adobe Flash Player pre-installed.  What wasn’t announced is that Mac is now using NVIDIA graphics cards with these laptops and all future implementations of their computer products. Which means that they’ve chosen to not use ATI radeon for whatever reason. They also failed to mention that NVIDIA has partnered with Adobe to deliver Flash through hardware acceleration.

The continued anti-flash sentiment has led us to believe that the tech community is not one of scientists and forward thinkers. We now leave our innovation to Hipsters and VCs. No longer is the internet a place where we can create a new universe. The west is won – Our future has been carved out for us. This future is determined by Apple, Facebook, Google and HTML5.

Of course, this is in direct contradiction to where these companies came from. The Startup Revolution is meant to free us from the grip of Corporations. The right to choose what we create, how we engage and which way the world turns.

All these companies, except Facebook are companies that thrive on profit. And you would think from all the recent press that they form the opinion of the entire world.

This post is not meant to be a lament, but as a thought. Who decides what tech is good tech? Who actually decides how far we can innovate?

It has become clear to us that user engagement makes that determination.

Just like with any software, It depends on who creates it.

true. it’s not the norm, therefore, there are not many good examples of flash use. a bad workman blames his tools etc.

    A couple remarks:
    1. HTML5 is not a company. It is, currently, a recommendation advanced by the W3C and groups associated with it for how to structure the next “version” of HTML, which browser vendors are free to implement as they see fit.
    2. Facebook thrives on profit just as much as the other companies listed. All companies thrive on profit.

At any rate, it seems like the person who is deciding what is good tech is Steve Jobs. I think the entire anti-flash debate and crusade begins and is carried by him. I think he has a disproportionate amount of influence on the tech community.
